When I was sailing around the world on my small sailboat, I was responsible for the lives of all the members of my family and crew. It was my job to be situationally aware so that the yacht and people on board survived.

Unfortunately survival is not guaranteed. When we sailed to New Zealand for the first time, four people on two different yachts died on the stormy trip south.

I worshipped at the altar of situational awareness, and because of that commitment, we had a safe eleven year voyage. The yacht and crew all survived.

The situationally aware sailor is 100% connected with everything happening around him. You have radar reaching out 12 miles to establish the perimeter of your world. Your eyes go out about five miles detecting ships on the horizon, and even farther when viewing high volcanic peaks in French Polynesia. In low lying Pacific atolls, you may not see a reef until you discover it by running aground. The first degree of situational awareness is knowing what is around you, and until you are absolutely certain as to your surroundings, you maintain a high state of alert.

The second degree of situational awareness focuses on the state of wind and seas. The wind and sea talk all the time, and if you want to survive, you must pay attention to what they are saying.

When there is a shift in sea state, you instantly know something important has changed. You feel the rhythm of the swells passing under your hull, and if the rhythm remains constant, you know all is well. When the rhythm, size, and direction of seas change, your world is about to change. A distant storm pushes swells in front of it warning you that a major storm is heading your way. The situationally aware sailor pays attention to the size and direction of seas, because survival depends on detecting and interpreting the message the ocean is sending.

The wind speaks volumes to the situationally aware sailor. Wind always happens for reason, and you must know the reason. The wind could be increasing because of a microburst, a cold front passing through, an approaching storm, and for dozens of other reasons. The wind can decrease and drop to zero from an equally large number of causes. There is no wind in the doldrums or in the eye of a hurricane. Low wind or no wind can be the harbinger of disaster. When the wind changes directions, it does so for a reason, and you better find out why if you want to survive.When sailing across the South Pacific Ocean, the southeast trade winds blow for thousands of miles from South America to Australia. If the wind shifts out of the southeast, you know something significant is happening. A situationally aware sailor does not passively sit in the cockpit watching the wind change. He actively records its direction and strength, and correlates that with the readings on his barometer. When he understands what is happening, he either gets out of harm's way or prepares the crew and yacht for a coming storm.

Your yacht speaks to you twenty-four hours a day.

When I am at sea and asleep in my bunk, I instantly wake up if the motion of the boat changes. I sense a difference in sea state, and I get up and find out what is happening. When the sound of sails flapping in the breeze becomes different, I wake up and check on the autopilot to see if our heading has changed which would cause the set of the sails to change. I scan the horizon for squalls and weather systems that would modify the way the sails interact with the wind. I listen to the creaking of the hull, and any new sounds are investigated to see if there are problems I need to sort out.

Situational awareness equals survival at sea.

I personally know three yachts that ran up on reefs when the captain was not situationally aware.

In the world of self-help, situational awareness is necessary for survival as well.

In the self-help world, situational awareness means psychological and emotional awareness.

Every day I meet people who are emotionally and psychologically disoriented. They are lost in a sea of unbridled emotion, and they run up on the same psychological reefs again and again. They go through the same storms over and over. They get struck by emotional lighting on a regular basis.

Much of the psychological carnage is completely avoidable. While problems are inevitable, unnecessary emotional turmoil is a waste of time and energy that could be used for better and more important things.

Life consists mainly of the storm of thoughts that blow through your mind. The events of life can be trivial, tragic, and even monumental in nature, but the events themselves have little power. It's the storm of thoughts about those events that causes so much trouble.

Self-Help Survival is all about the storm of thoughts that blow through your mind.

It's all about you becoming situationally aware of what makes emotional storms happen and avoiding unnecessary storms of the mind.

I survived a fifty thousand mile sailing voyage around the world because I was situationally aware.
