Life is not just about survival. For me life is much bigger. It's about being part of something great.
The greatest adventure in my life was sailing around the world with my family on our catamaran, Exit Only. Our sailboat is small by modern standards. It's only 21 feet wide and 39 feet long - a fairly small size to take a family of four around the world on an eleven year circumnavigation. Nevertheless, it's big enough to have an awesome adventure.
The photograph shows Exit Only tied to the shore along the southern coast of Turkey after sailing up the Red Sea. Turkey was our special reward after a challenging 1500 mile passage through the Red Sea from Aden, Yemen to Alexandria, Egypt. Two of our crew caught dengue fever in Masawa, Eritrea on the trip north, but we all survived intact.
It was quite an adventure. We survived a global tsunami in Thailand and dodged pirates in the Malacca Straits and Gulf of Aden. We steered clear of monsoon thunderstorms in Singapore and Malaysia, while five other yachts were struck by lightning. We snokled in the enchanted atolls of the South Pacific and survived a life threatening car accident in New Zealand. We even made a 10,000 km trek in the outback of Australia in a Land Rover Defender.
Sailing Exit Only around the world with my family was an unforgettable adventure. We were truly part of something great.
I have always wanted to be part of something great.
My first encounter with something great was when I started working at King Khalid Eye Specialist Hospital (KKESH) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In 1983, there were no Saudi Arabian eye doctors. KKESH was started to provide eye care for the people of Arabia and to train Saudi Physicians to become eye surgeons. Our first class of surgical residents started in 1984, and four years later, we graduated our first group of highly qualified board certified eye surgeons that would serve in Arabia for the next generation.
When I worked at KKESH I knew that my work training Saudi eye surgeons would make a difference in the lives of millions of people on the Arabian Peninsula. For sixteen years I was truly part of something great.
My second encounter with something great was when I started working as a flying doctor with the Indian Health Service in the American southwest. My job was to provide eye care to the survivors of Native American Holocaust. I was based in Phoenix, Arizona at Phoenix Indian Medical Center. I spent 2/3 of my time in Phoenix, and 1/3 of my time in the field flying out to Indian Reservations to deliver eye care. The Phoenix Service Unit provides eye care to more than 23 tribes in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and Southern California. I became a Flying Doctor and flew out to the White Mountain Apache Reservation, San Carlos Apache Reservation, Hopi Reservation, Colorado River Tribes Reservation, Hualapai Reservation, and Havasupai Reservation in the Grand Canyon. The Indian Health Service accomplishes a great deal with few resources. Underpaid and dedicated professionals work around the clock providing health care to Native Americans who have been exploited and oppressed for hundreds of years.
In Australia, there is a National Sorry Day which is an annual event that has been held in Australia on 26 May since 1998 to remember and commemorate the oppression and genocide of the country's indigenous population. A National Sorry Day is long overdue in America to remember and commemorate the holocaust against Native Americans.
For the ten years that I worked with the Indian Health Service, I was truly part of something great.
There is a difference between being part of something great that was created by others and creating something great that you do yourself.
For the rest of my life, I have dedicated myself to creating something great.

Social media has become unsocial. It has degenerated into a truth optional war zone in which people take sides. They draw lines in the sand, and if you are on the wrong side of their line, then a battle begins.
